Description

A turkey dry rub is a game-changer for any turkey dish, infusing bold, zesty flavors that elevate the meat’s natural taste. The rub creates a flavorful crust that helps lock in moisture while delivering a crispy skin and juicy interior. Ideal for holiday feasts, casual dinners, or BBQs, this turkey dry rub recipe is customizable and versatile, allowing you to craft the perfect seasoning for your turkey.

Ingredients

Scale

Spices and Herbs:

  • 2 tbsp paprika (regular or smoked)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp salt (kosher or sea salt)
  • 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary (crushed finely)
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ½ tsp cumin (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Rub:
In a small bowl, combine all the dry rub ingredients. Mix well to ensure even distribution of the spices.

  • Prep the Turkey:
Thaw the turkey completely if frozen. Rinse the turkey under cold water, remove giblets, and pat dry with paper towels. Trim any excess fat from the bird.

  • Apply the Rub:
Gently loosen the skin over the turkey breast. Rub a generous amount of the dry rub under the skin directly on the meat. Massage the remaining rub evenly over the skin and inside the cavity.

  • Rest the Turkey:
If time allows, cover the turkey with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 12-24 hours to allow the flavors to meld.

  • Cook the Turkey:
Roasting: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roast the turkey for approximately 3-3.5 hours, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Baste occasionally for a golden-brown skin.

Grilling: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill the turkey for about 20 minutes per pound, turning occasionally to avoid burning, until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

  • Rest the Turkey:
After cooking, rest the turkey for 20-30 minutes before carving to allow juices to redistribute.

Notes

For an extra flavor boost, you can brush the turkey with melted butter or olive oil before applying the dry rub to help the spices adhere and achieve a crispy, golden finish.
