Description

The Chicken Philly Cheesesteak is a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, replacing beef with tender, juicy chicken. Thinly sliced chicken is sautéed with caramelized onions and bell peppers, then smothered in melted provolone cheese and stuffed into a toasted hoagie roll. This sandwich is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for lunch, dinner, or game day!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken & Vegetables:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp onion powder

For the Cheesesteak:

  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or mozzarella, white American cheese)
  • 2 hoagie rolls (or sub rolls), split
  • 1 tbsp butter, for toasting rolls

Optional Add-Ons:

  • ½ cup mushrooms, sliced (for extra flavor)
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (for a spicy kick)
  • 1 tbsp mayo (spread on rolls for extra creaminess)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

  1. Place the chicken breasts in the freezer for 15 minutes (this makes slicing easier).
  2. Slice the chicken into thin strips. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and onion powder.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables

  1. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced bell peppers, onions, and minced garlic. Sauté until softened and slightly caramelized (5-7 minutes).
  3. Remove vegetables from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Chicken

  1. In the same skillet, add 1 tbsp olive oil and butter.
  2. Add the sliced chicken and cook until fully cooked and lightly browned (5-7 minutes).
  3. Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet and mix well.

Step 4: Melt the Cheese

  1. Lower the heat and divide the chicken and veggie mixture into two portions in the pan.
  2. Lay two slices of cheese over each portion. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the cheese melt (1-2 minutes).

Step 5: Toast the Hoagie Rolls

  1. Spread butter on the inside of the hoagie rolls.
  2. Toast on a skillet or in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.

Step 6: Assemble the Sandwich

  1. Spread mayo (if using) inside the toasted hoagie rolls.
  2. Use a spatula to scoop the cheesy chicken and veggie mixture into the rolls.
  3. Serve hot with fries, coleslaw, or a fresh salad. Enjoy!

Notes

For extra juiciness, add a splash of chicken broth to the skillet when cooking the chicken. This helps keep the meat tender and flavorful.
