Ingredients

Scale

Brownie Layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Cookie Layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Optional Add-ins:

  • Chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans)
  • Sea salt for a salted caramel twist
  • Caramel chips or peanut butter chips
  • Dried cranberries or coconut flakes

Instructions

  • Prepare the Brownie Layer:
    • Melt butter over medium heat and let it cool slightly.
    • Mix the melted butter with granulated and brown sugars in a bowl.
    • Add eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until smooth.
    • Sift flour, cocoa powder, and salt, then add to the wet ingredients. Stir until just combined and set aside.
  • Prepare the Cookie Dough:
    • Cream butter and sugars in a bowl until light and fluffy.
    • Add egg and vanilla extract, beating until smooth.
    • Mix flour, baking soda, and salt, then gradually add to the wet mixture. Stir until dough forms.
    • Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Layer and Bake:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
    • Spread the brownie batter evenly at the bottom of the pan.
    • Drop spoonfuls of cookie dough over the brownie batter and gently spread it.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • Cool and Serve:
    • Let cool completely before slicing into squares. Serve on its own or with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For a perfect texture, ensure not to overmix the brownie batter or overbake the cookies. Slight underbaking keeps the brownie layer fudgy while the cookie layer remains chewy.
